The God of all Comfort
It is hard not to have moments of sitting back and reflecting on life and the difference that Jesus makes. Many of us are not very good when it comes to serious health issues, where one can feel so helpless.
Our world teaches and models to us that we can be in control of almost everything. And yet, with issues such as health (ours and those we are close to), we often painfully realise that this is not the case. We must look somewhere else. And when we do we see that there is a sovereign God. While we might not understand his plans and purposes at times, we know that he is in control of all things and that he works for the good of those who love Him (Rom 8:28).
As Bishop Ivan Lee recently said, reflecting on his own health battles, “I am certainly no apostle Paul, but his words “to live is Christ, and to die is gain” became my words in a most personal way. …... But I also know that my times are in his hands.”
Sadly, suffering is a reality in this world. That is the nature of the impact of sin. We see time and again that the actions of just one rebellious person can impact the lives of many.
At the same time, God is described as the God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3). May we pray to Him to provide comfort for those who are suffering at this time, but also for all those who we know are suffering in other ways.
