The Importance of Mothers

… clearly recalling your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois, then in your mother Eunice, and that I am convinced is in you also.
— 2 Timothy 1:5

I was watching the news this week and was touched by Labor leader Bill Shorten’s response to a less than sensitive newspaper report about his mum.  Whatever our political leanings, we were able to appreciate Bill’s obvious love for his mum who had sacrificed a great deal for the sake of Bill and his family.  Many of us have experienced this sacrificial love from our mothers in our lives and benefitted a great deal from what they were willing to give in love for us.

The best thing mums can do is to teach their children about the Lord Jesus.  With a very sick father my mum was the bread winner in our family and had to work on Sundays to make ends meet.  However, before she left for work, she encouraged me to go to the local Sunday School.  I’m very grateful for that encouragement as seeds of faith were laid in my heart from an early age that laid the foundation for me becoming a follower of the Lord Jesus.

I think this is a bit like Timothy’s story.  Tim’s mum Eunice and grandmother Lois lived a “sincere faith” that they passed onto Tim.  And now Tim is partnering with Paul to spread the gospel in the ancient world, and provide teaching to us!

We can be thankful for many great sacrificial mums. On this day also spare a thought and prayer for those for which mothers’ day is painful.  My mum passed away not so long ago and so I know something of this pain.  Others have had difficult relationships.  And pray for our mums (and grandmothers …) that they may be strong in their faith and encouraging in the way they pass it on.

Happy Mothers’ Day!
